Motorola Offers Energy-Efficient Chargers for Mobile Devices and Bluetooth-Enabled Products

Permalink 01:25:06 pm, Categories: Motorola

South African Ring Tones

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: Motorola, Inc. announced today that it is the first major cell phone manufacturer to redesign all its mobile phone and accessory chargers (external power supplies) to be ENERGY STAR-qualified. ENERGY STAR is designed to help consumers identify energy-efficient products which meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE).

Climate change is widely recognized as one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, and Motorola is doing its part to help protect the environment and spur innovative solutions such as ENERGY STAR-qualified power supplies.

"EPA salutes Motorola's leadership as the first company to ensure all of the power adapters in their phone chargers earn the ENERGY STAR," said Bill Wehrum, Acting EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. "By being more energy efficient, ENERGY STAR-qualified adapters reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution associated with the generation of electricity."

According to EPA, if every phone sold in the U.S. this year used an ENERGY STAR qualified adapter in its charger, the energy saved could light 760,000 homes for a year. In addition, it would prevent well over 1 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent emissions of more than 200,000 cars.

"At Motorola, we realize the importance of helping to protect the environment," said Greg Estell, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, MobileME, Motorola, Inc. "As a leading provider of consumer electronic products to millions of American homes, Motorola is dedicated to providing solutions, like ENERGY STAR-qualified chargers, that help improve the everyday lives of consumers."

The ENERGY STAR logo will be incorporated on the packaging of Motorola's aftermarket wall-charging solutions so consumers can easily identify energy efficient products.

Motorola Redefines the Developer Experience with New MOTODEV Studio

Permalink 01:21:07 pm, Categories: Motorola

South African Ring Tones

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: MOTODEV Studio is designed to accelerate the application development life cycle – from requirements definition to testing and deployment. Extensible and modular, the MOTODEV Studio supports plug-ins for new product tools and delivers updates and new features through a web-based service, ensuring that developers always have the latest functionality. Aligning with Motorola’s seamless mobility strategy, MOTODEV Studio will support application development across all of Motorola’s products – including mobile, connected home, and enterprise solutions.

In its first release, Motorola is introducing MOTODEV Studio for Java ME – a complete Java ME application development platform for mobile handsets. MOTODEV Studio for Java ME provides a full set of tools for compiling, debugging, and testing mobile Java applications for Motorola’s hottest 3GSM devices. Instead of testing applications via the Java ME environment on the handset, MOTODEV Studio for Java ME emulates individual Java API’s on the desktop, enabling developers to jump-start their development cycle before phones are even available.

Maximum Flexibility for Minimal Complexity

In addition to MOTODEV Studio for Java ME, Motorola is offering a standalone Motorola Java ME SDK. The SDK provides the same emulation and web-based update features as MOTODEV Studio for Java ME, combined with the flexibility to be integrated with other IDEs. This gives developers choice in IDEs while significantly reducing the steps they must take to create, test and deploy an application.

“With the new MOTODEV Studio platform, we’re truly taking the developer experience to the next level, offering a fresh new approach to how our developer community innovates and communicates with Motorola,” said Christy Wyatt, vice president, ecosystem and market development, Motorola. “MOTODEV Studio is another great example of how we are delivering on our promise of connecting the developer community with the resources they need and executing on Motorola’s vision of seamless mobility.”

“Software development for mobile devices is a high growth area within the Eclipse community,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director, Eclipse Foundation. “We are pleased to see Motorola’s contribution and leadership to help drive the success of Eclipse across a broad range of applications from servers to handsets.”

“As an open and modular framework, MOTODEV Studio will increase our productivity in mobile application development -- allowing us to focus on providing exciting gaming experiences on Motorola products,” said Gonzague de Vallois, Vice President of Publishing, Gameloft.

“TeleNav is delighted to be part of the beta program for MOTODEV Studio,” said Dr. Bob Rennard, CTO, TeleNav. “We believe that MOTODEV Studio will accelerate development cycles and make it easier to deploy our applications on Motorola handsets”

Dialogue with MOTODEV
MOTODEV Studio provides developers with direct access to the information they want and need via a unique communication channel. With one simple download to the desktop, MOTODEV Studio will notify developers when new tools and SDKs are available. The channel also keeps developers “in the know” on recently announced Motorola handsets, MOTODEV events and special go-to-market services available to them.

The initial release of the MOTODEV Studio framework featuring MOTODEV Studio for JavaME will be available for registered MOTODEV developers to download in late April 2007 at www.motorola.com/developer. The release will include support tools for an array of new, “wickedly cool” handsets including the stylish Motorola MOTOKRZR K1, ultra-fast MOTORAZR maxx V6 and the music-optimized MOTOROKR Z6m.

Experience MOTODEV Studio
To learn more about the MOTODEV Studio framework, visit the MOTODEV Fast Track event, co-located with CTIA Wireless at the Orange County Convention Center in room 304 E&F on Wednesday, March 28 from 11:00 – 5:00 EST.

Motorola Mesh Technology Wins Again at Super Bowl XLI

Permalink 04:01:38 pm, Categories: Motorola

South African Ring Tones

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: Motorola, Inc. today announced that the Miami-Dade Police Department deployed the Motorola Event Management Solution, featuring its MOTOMESH(TM) multi-radio broadband wireless network and biometric technologies to enhance public safety measures during Super Bowl XLI. Additionally, Motorola MOTOBRIDGE(TM) was used to deliver the interoperability of mission critical information as part of its secure communications suite.

While players and fans concentrated on the game, public safety officers and agents from state and federal law enforcement agencies relied on the Motorola wireless broadband network to monitor real-time video surveillance and access mission critical applications. Motorola and video security solution provider, NICE Systems (Nasdaq: NICE), provided a deployable surveillance system, which allowed wireless cameras to be strategically operated from numerous vantage points throughout the stadium. The Motorola Intelligent Video Solution featuring the NiceVision(R) Digital Video Surveillance was used by security teams surrounding the game to have wireless access and control of the live video surveillance to assist in securing the venue.

The MOTOMESH network delivered seamless connectivity to video and other mission critical data applications over the secure 4.9GHz public safety band to police headquarters and command vehicles in various locations, increasing overall situational awareness and responsiveness. The MOTOMESH network provided officers access to mesh video surveillance cameras, allowing them to pan across the crowd, zoom in and out, in real time, while viewing live streaming video via mobile command posts operating on Motorola ML900 Rugged Notebook Computers.

Augmented by the real-time video streaming capabilities of MOTOMESH, Motorola Biometric Solutions provided on-site access to Miami-Dade Police Department's criminal database. The Motorola Biometric Solution used consisted of the hand-held Motorola Mobile Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) connected wirelessly to the Motorola Printrak Biometric Identification System (BIS).

Interoperable Communications

Motorola provided public safety personnel, from the FBI to the Super Bowl operations staff, access to the 4.9GHz public safety band in order to securely monitor the stadium, while providing a single interoperable solution for the various agencies. The state deployed seven Emergency Disaster Incident Communications System (EDICS) trailers to allow the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to coordinate between agencies using different communication technologies and protocols. The EDICS trailers (one in each of seven administrative regions) have been designed to enable public safety interoperability through Motorola's MOTOBRIDGE soft-switch technology. These trailers house multiple-voice radios of different frequencies and bands and manufacturers -- as well as several MOTOBRIDGE -- and connect police, fire and public safety personnel from different jurisdictions through Florida's SUNCOM network.

"Recognized as a proven leader in public safety and municipal WiFi deployments, Motorola is thrilled to have been chosen for the second year in a row to provide wireless network communications to the security teams responsible for the safety of those attending a time-honored event like the Super Bowl," said Mark Moon, senior vice president, government and commercial markets, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. "Committed to our vision of seamless mobility, Motorola provided the multitude of security personnel with access to the critical voice, video, and data information which was one of the many factors they needed to keep everyone safe."

The Motorola Event Management and MOTOBRIDGE solutions offer municipalities and public safety organizations the interoperability and collaborative technologies to wirelessly connect to the mission critical applications they need, regardless of event size or scale. For more information on these solutions please visit http://www.Motorola.com/government.jsp .

MOTOMESH is part of the Motorola MOTOwi4(TM) portfolio of wireless broadband solutions and services that create, complement and complete IP networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes wi4 Fixed, wi4 Mesh, wi4 Broadband over Powerline, and wi4 WiMAX solutions for private and public networks.

Motorola's Network and Security Operations Center

Permalink 05:13:59 am, Categories: Motorola

South African Ring Tones

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) has expanded the capabilities of its state-of-the-art, centralized Network Operations Center (NOC) and Security Operations Center (SOC) to offer managed services such as remote monitoring and diagnostics for private and public wireless networks, including cellular and wireless broadband systems. These expanded capabilities ensure continuous performance and stability monitoring, immediate event detection and troubleshooting, and technical dispatch services across multiple types of networks.

Historically, Motorola has offered monitoring services for private radio system customers such as municipalities, enterprises and public safety agencies. In 2006, Motorola enhanced its monitoring process and implemented a software solution to manage events for private and public networks, known in the industry as a correlation engine. This new solution provides end-to-end service visibility to rapidly expose and resolve network and security issues. Technologists were required to participate in a six-month training program to help them become experts in detecting, characterizing and responding to issues identified by the correlation engine.

"Motorola's Network and Security Monitoring services are backed by a set of industry standards designed to assure superior service delivery across key measures in system reliability, routine maintenance, rapid response and restoration," said David Jones, vice president, Global Services Delivery, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. "In 2005, Motorola's NOC achieved TL9000 certification to ensure the highest level of quality system management. Likewise, our SOC is on track to achieve certification by mid-year. Today, more than 600 global customers benefit from our NOC/SOC operations."

One of those customers is Cobb County Department of Public Safety, Georgia, which is managed by Tracy Roberts, radio system manager for Cobb County. Roberts oversees the County's newly installed digital 800 MHz public safety communications system that serves 2600 county and municipal subscribers across 345 square miles. Roberts is an advocate of Motorola's real-time monitoring services for Cobb County's integrated ASTRO trunked voice and data network.

"Before contracting with Motorola's NOC, we responded to network issues as they occurred and basically operated in a break-fix mode," said Roberts. "With real-time monitoring services, potential problems are identified quickly before they adversely impact the network or the users of the network. It is a critical management tool that helps maximize system uptime and provides immediate awareness of network problems enabling managers like me to enhance our resolution tactics."

Co-housed within its NOC, Motorola offers a best of breed Security Operations Center, providing 24x7 security monitoring services. Aided by leading correlation and visualization tools, Motorola's SOC technologists keep a proactive eye on customers' networks -- as well as Motorola's -- to quickly detect and characterize suspicious and malicious activity and respond intelligently. Early detection and rapid characterization are key to identifying and responding to trouble before users and vital services are impacted -- critically important to global companies like Motorola.

Motorola manages its own IT security operations in-house, monitoring more than 69 locations globally. Due to the enormous investment in cost, most companies don't manage their own security, according to Jones, they outsource it.

"Our capabilities and expertise demonstrate our ability to scale and provide high performance monitoring to customers on a global basis," he said.

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: Nokia today announced that the Nokia Software Updater application is now available from selected Nokia local support web pages as well as http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate. After a successful trial run last year, Nokia is expanding the program to enable people to update their own mobile device software without having to visit a service point. So far, over three quarters of a million people have updated their Nokia device using Nokia Software Updater.

"As mobile devices become more intelligent, software updates make it possible for us to provide a better experience for people by adding and updating functions," said Jarkko Sakki, Director, Multimedia Customer Care, Nokia. "For example, the recent software update for the Nokia N80 added support for internet calls. The Nokia Software Updater can make it fast and easy for people to get the latest software for their compatible Nokia device. As mobile devices become more like computers in terms of performance, it's a natural step for us to offer internet based software updates so that people can have the best available capabilities in their Nokia device."

Nokia Software Updater is a free application that enables people to update the device software on compatible Nokia devices, including some of the world's best selling 3G devices such as the Nokia N70, Nokia N73 and Nokia E61. Initially available only in English, the Nokia Software Updater is now available in almost 40 different langugages. The link to Nokia Software Updater is also available in the most recent versions of Nokia PC Suite software.

Once the application is installed on a compatible computer, users can connect their compatible Nokia device via a USB cable and Nokia Software Updater automatically detects the device type, and whether any required software updates are needed and it then guides users through the updating process.

Smarties and Motorola get sweet together

South African Ring Tones

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: Ce De Candy Inc., manufacturer and distributor of SMARTIES(R), the classic sugar candy line, has implemented an enterprise mobility solution to meet the FDA's new Food Bioterrorism regulation while also increasing the efficiency and accuracy of manufacturing processes throughout its supply chain and warehouse.

The FDA regulation required that food manufacturers maintain records that allow complete traceability for all raw goods and manufactured products by June 2006. To meet the critical mandate, Ce De implemented a mobility solution consisting of the Motorola MC9000 rugged mobile computer running PTS's TracerPlus software, as well as the Motorola WS5100 Wireless Switch, AP300 Access Ports and the ES3000 with Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch. The solution was configured to existing processes at Ce De Candy within one week, with full deployment being finalized within the following four weeks.

"We needed a solution that would allow us to comply with the FDA mandate, but at the same time, not disrupt the manufacturing processes we already had in place," said Rick DePinto, IT manager for Ce De Candy. "The Motorola/PTS enterprise mobility solution met our firm timing and budget requirements, increased our productivity, and improved data quality and process efficiencies, while providing the superior ruggedness that is essential in our warehouse environment."

The Motorola MC9000 is used to scan raw materials received from vendors and placed into inventory in the Ce De warehouse -- each material is immediately assigned a raw material lot number which will eventually be connected to a finished good and its finished goods lot number, as per the Food Bioterrorism regulation. The finished goods lot number will be used for tracking through the pick and pack process and until finished goods are shipped out against a customer order.

"Motorola's manufacturing solutions play a vital role in improving the operations of organizations," said Kevin Prouty, senior director of manufacturing solutions, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. "Enterprise mobility enables organizations like Ce De Candy to transform and streamline current practices, allowing for quicker velocity of products through the warehouse, essentially optimizing all warehouse operations."

Ce De Candy also selected Motorola's multi-year Service from the Start service plan. Service from the Start provides enhanced support beyond the standard product warranty -- including priority response and call escalation, and comprehensive device coverage including cosmetic repair.

"Ce De Candy implemented this enterprise mobility solution from Motorola and PTS because of the continuous customer service and support we received -- from purchase decision through deployment," added DePinto. "And with the multi-year Service from the Start service plan, we are guaranteed top services and support for our investment."

Paul Oakenfold, Masters at Work and Murk will be taking to the decks and promise to rock Miami on the 22nd and 23rd March 2007.

Night Tennis is part of Sony Ericsson’s sponsored entertainment, competitions and events programme running during the week of the Sony Ericsson Open (21st March – 1st April). This is the second Night Tennis event, the first premiered in Madrid during the Sony Ericsson Championships, November 2006.

Eight players will take to the court wearing specially designed neon whites to serve up a new type of tennis. Played in pitch black, with UV as the only source of light, its fast paced round robin format promises to revolutionise the way tennis is played and watched.

Night Tennis will provide clubbers with a sensory extravaganza like no other. Each tennis game is punctuated by explosive beats and an incredible light show, delivered to the audience on a unique 25m projection screen. The balls, court and net along with player’s shirts, skirts and shoes will be fully UV reactive. In between games a fashion extravaganza will showcase the latest in illuminated style.

As each tournament draws to a close and the adrenaline starts to drop away, Murk will warm up the crowd up with their Miami Classics Set. On the Thursday night, Masters at Work will follow, playing their legendary New York Classics Set and Friday night will see legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold take the crowd dancing long into the night with his Classics Set.

Paul Oakenfold is a pioneer of the dance music scene and likes to be ahead of the game. He is therefore looking forward to performing at Night Tennis; “I’m very intrigued by the whole Night Tennis concept - who would have expected sport and electronic culture to combine in this way? The opportunity to play a rare set of classics at the Winter Music Conference is something that is a challenge as well as being a real night of nostalgia for me and the people of Miami.”

Louie Vega from Masters At Work says, ‘We are delighted to be invited to play at this unique event during the Miami conference week. To play a night of complete classics for the Miami week will be very special for us’.

Dee Dutta, CVP and Head of Marketing for Sony Ericsson explains, “Sony Ericsson is really excited to be staging Night Tennis at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Our aim is to create a party experience that young people in the city can enjoy, bringing them closer to the excitement and power of the stadium tennis being played by some of the world’s most famous sports stars. It’s brilliant to have DJs like Paul Oakenfold and Masters at Work onboard for Night Tennis. We’re looking forward to a truly spectacular event.

Our partnership with the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is the largest and most innovative in the history of the sport. We are making the game more fan friendly, interactive and exciting through music and technology – live bands at events, live scoring and enhanced content to mobile phones.

The Sony Ericsson Open will be held at the Tennis Centre at Crandon Park, Miami, Florida from March 21 - April 1, 2007. It boasts the strongest full-field of players from both the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour outside the Grand Slams. 96 men and 96 women in the singles and 32 men's teams and 32 women's teams in the doubles will vie for over $6.9 million in prize money. Defending champions are Roger Federer in the men’s singles, Svetlana Kuznetsova in the women’s singles, Jonas Bjorkman/Max Mirnyi in the men’s doubles and Lisa Raymond/Samantha Stosur in the women’s doubles.

Motorola Initiates Industry-wide Project to Create Open Source Environment

Permalink 05:03:18 am, Categories: Motorola

South African Ring Tones

www.Ring-Tones.co.za: Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced it is initiating a new open source project to develop a complete high availability operating environment based on Service Availability Forum(TM) (SA Forum) standards. The objective of the new "OpenSAF" project is to accelerate broad adoption of an SA Forum compliant operating environment.

The goals of the OpenSAF project are to:

  • Create an open source implementation of a high availability operating environment which includes the SA Forum Application Interface Specification (AIS)
  • Develop necessary additional complementary services necessary to deploy and manage the software
  • Accelerate the development of SA Forum specifications by proposing enhancements implemented in the OpenSAF project
  • Establish a broadly adopted high availability operating environment that can be leveraged by computing technology companies, NEPs, and other industries requiring high availability, and ISVs -- Utilize an open source licensing model not tied to any commercial implementation

With this approach, network equipment providers (NEPs) will be able to leverage the implementation of a deployed high availability software platform with the knowledge that enhancements will be proposed to the SA Forum for inclusion in future open specifications. NEPs also will be able to help service providers lower operating costs by using a common software platform across multiple types of equipment. Common predictive actions and common provisioning and monitoring interfaces will help reduce training and specialization, enabling service providers to use their resources more flexibly, efficiently and productively.

Many NEPs have endorsed the concept of the OpenSAF initiative, including Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERIC), Motorola's Networks and Enterprise business, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Nortel (NYSE: NT), OKI (TYO: 6703), and Siemens Networks.

Several providers of computing and communications technology also have indicated support for the OpenSAF initiative including Interphase (Nasdaq: INPH), MontaVista Software, Inc., and Wind River (Nasdaq: WIND).

Both Motorola and Ericsson will contribute resources from the beginning of the initiative to enhance the open source product and accelerate the development and deployment of SA Forum specifications based on industry requirements. Motorola initially will contribute its NetPlane(R) Core Service (NCS) software to the OpenSAF project. NCS is a complete operating environment that includes SA Forum services and a complementary set of required services necessary for a deployable implementation.

Hakan Eriksson, chief technology officer, Ericsson: "Ericsson is a strong supporter of initiatives such as OpenSAF. By focusing on reference implementations for established standards, we believe that OpenSAF can both accelerate the development and improve the quality of future specifications."

Asif Naseem, president of SA Forum: "The SA Forum's HPI specification is already delivering benefits as a widely adopted industry standard. The OpenSAF project will help repeat that success with the SA Forum AIS specification, extending those benefits to all developers of platforms that require 5NINES availability. Customer adoption of the AIS implementation depends on real world implementations of the standard, and Motorola's implementation contributes to the ongoing success of SA Forum."

Stephen Dow, vice president and general manager, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola, Inc: "Feedback from our NEP customers has prompted us to undertake this initiative as an open source project can leverage development resources throughout the industry. This can lead to more rapid development of a fully featured deployable reference implementation of SA Forum compliant high availability software for a wide range of platforms."

Magnus Karlson, chairman of the board, SCOPE Alliance: "The OpenSAF project is consistent with the SCOPE Alliance goal of promoting and enabling an ecosystem of both suppliers and consumers of COTS building blocks based on open source and open interface specifications. SCOPE views implementations like OpenSAF as important test beds for standardization enhancements, and mechanisms for accelerating the adoption of new features for COTS building blocks."

Ken Klein, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president at Wind River: "Collaborative, open source development plays a significant role in Wind River's device software optimization strategy and we welcome the opportunity to actively participate in the OpenSAF initiative. We believe this effort will result in a reliable, feature-rich high-availability framework for our networks customers. We are committed to including support for OpenSAF in Wind River(R) Workbench, our industry-leading comprehensive set of device software development tools, thus providing customers a common development environment across multiple software development projects."

Jorge Magalhaes, director of marketing, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola, Inc.: "We will transition our Avantellis(TM) series communications servers to utilize OpenSAF. This will make a pre-integrated and validated ATCA based computing platform available to the market shortly after the first release of the open source code."

Tom Kelly, Chairman & CEO, MontaVista Software: "As a long time contributor to the OpenAIS open source work, MontaVista is excited to support the OpenSAF initiative. Combined with ATCA based hardware and a Carrier Grade Linux operating system, OpenSAF provides a key high-availability component to complete a full carrier grade commercial-off-the-shelf solution. MontaVista will include support of OpenSAF in our MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition and our DevRocket development tool suite."

The first release of the open source code base will be made available by end of 2nd quarter on the OpenSAF Web site ( http://www.OpenSAF.org ).
